‍Dear Visitor,

Eight years after Kevin died, I'm still not a fan of Christmas.

But I've learned something crucial that I wish someone had told me in those first devastating years - something that goes far beyond the emotional support everyone talks about.

My Article Just Went Live

I've written about the breakfast in Italy that nearly cost me a friendship, the crisis my body was in that nobody understood (including me), and why grief affects far more than just your heart and mind.

It's called "The Christmas Survival Guide I Wish I'd Had" and it's now published on the Grief Specialist website.

‍A Different Kind Of Christmas Survival Guide

Most grief support doesn’t talk about food beyond the generic “eat well”—yet the right food can make a real difference. Watch this short video to learn what makes this book so unique.

One of the core principles in 'Nourishing Through Loss' is my 80:20 approach.

Here's what it means:

80% of the time, you aim for nourishing, balanced meals that support your body through the stress of grief. Regular meal times (more on how to make this easier below). The "magic trio" of vegetables/fruit + protein + healthy fats that keeps your blood sugar stable.

20% of the time, you go with the flow. When Christmas dinner doesn’t go to plan, when you’re at a party or travelling, you eat what’s available. You have that piece of cake—and fully enjoy it.

This isn't about perfection. It's about giving your body enough foundation to cope - while being gentle with yourself when things don't go as planned.

Because here's the truth: when you're grieving, you can't control the emotional waves. But you CAN give your body the foundation it needs to handle them better.

The 80:20 approach means you're building in flexibility and self-compassion from the start.

Control what you can. Let go when you can't.

That's it. No guilt. No counting. No restriction.

Just enough structure to support you, with plenty of room to be human.

‍What's Inside

Every recipe in 'Nourishing Through Loss' is designed with this approach in mind:

  • No calorie counting or rigid rules
  • Freedom to enjoy these meals without guilt or worry
  • Nourishing & delicious meals and drinks that comfort and give you energy
  • 50+ simple recipes to support your body through grief
  • Practical strategies for the moments when 80% isn't possible

Creating 'Eating Anchors' Over The Holiays

Knowing that regular meals help is one thing—but how do you actually keep a routine going amid the holiday chaos?

I know how difficult this can be, especially if you’re cooking for just yourself like me. That’s why I’ve made a video sharing the strategies that help me stay on track most days (remember my 80:20 rule?). And actually—I forgot to mention the most important one in the video—get a slow cooker! Honestly, it’s a lifesaver.

In this video, you'll discover:

  • Why your body craves rhythm (circadian rhythms + Ayurvedic wisdom)
  • The 12-hour overnight fast (what 'intermittent fasting' really means)
  • Why making lunch your main meal changes everything and how you can do this easily
  • The first rule of snacking (and why it matters)
  • How to create 'eating anchors' during holiday chaos

This isn't about being rigid—it's about giving your body some external structure when everything else feels unpredictable and out of control.

You Are Not Alone In This

I know how exceptionally hard December can be—the pressure to ‘join in the fun’, emotional triggers at every turn, tempting food everywhere, disrupted routines, overwhelm, exhaustion.

If you’re struggling, know that you’re not weak. Your body is genuinely under a lot of stress. That’s why this additional support—nutritional, practical, compassionate—can make a real difference.

Whether you read the article, watch my Christmas Survival videos, or explore the full book, I hope you find something here to help you feel a little more grounded and better supported this Christmas.

Much love,

Sabine
